GTA 6 Online Multiplayer Won't Arrive Until 2027, Twitch CEO Says

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy says Rockstar Games plans to launch Grand Theft Auto 6 as a single-player title on November 19, with online multiplayer expected to follow in 2027. Take-Two has confirmed continued support for the existing GTA Online.

‘Grand Theft Auto 6’ won’t be getting online multiplayer until 2027

Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch without an online multiplayer component, and players hoping for a new version of Grand Theft Auto Online will likely have to wait until 2027, according to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy. In an interview with Bloomberg, Clancy said he has spent considerable time discussing Rockstar Games' plans for the highly anticipated title and its online future.

«You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer,» Clancy said, describing conversations in which Twitch helped Rockstar think about how to engage the platform's creators. His comments offer the clearest public signal yet that the next-generation online mode is not arriving alongside the base game.

Rockstar Games and parent company Take-Two Interactive have framed Grand Theft Auto 6 as a single-player experience. During a shareholder meeting, Take-Two executives described the title as a «single-player title» and said the company will «continue to support GTA Online after GTA 6 releases, and beyond.» That means players who want a multiplayer fix will keep signing into the current version of Grand Theft Auto Online, which originally launched on October 1, 2013, just weeks after Grand Theft Auto 5 arrived.

The gap between the single-player release and a new online mode echoes the rollout of Grand Theft Auto 5, though the wait this time appears longer. Earlier this month, Rockstar announced what it called the «next evolution» of the current Grand Theft Auto Online offering through a collaboration with the role-playing community nopixel, a sign that the existing online ecosystem remains a priority while the sequel's multiplayer component is developed.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19. Rockstar also announced «Grand Theft Auto 6: The Album,» a 34-track collection featuring exclusive songs from major artists. Six tracks have been released for streaming, including contributions from Travis Scott, Future, Fred Again.., Morgan Wallen, Pink Pantheress and Keith Richards. The full soundtrack has yet to be revealed, and the album will be available in multiple vinyl and CD variants alongside the game.

The multiplayer timeline matters for the broader gaming industry because Grand Theft Auto Online has been a durable revenue engine for Take-Two, generating recurring spending through updates, in-game purchases and creator-driven content. A new online mode tied to Grand Theft Auto 6 could reset that ecosystem and draw fresh attention from streamers and live-service audiences. Clancy's remarks suggest Twitch sees the 2027 launch as a major moment for viewership, potentially larger than the initial release bump.

For now, Rockstar has not publicly confirmed a specific date for Grand Theft Auto 6 Online. The company has focused its messaging on the single-player campaign and the accompanying album, while Take-Two has emphasized continuity for the current GTA Online. Players and creators are left with a familiar pattern: a blockbuster single-player launch first, followed by a separate online world later.
