Darkwing Duck Reboot Lands Series Order at Disney+ With Mark Hamill and Seth Rogen
Disney+ has greenlit a Darkwing Duck animated series nearly six years after the project was first reported in development, with Mark Hamill voicing Drake Mallard and Seth Rogen joining the cast and executive producing.
Disney+ has officially ordered a Darkwing Duck reboot to series, ending a wait of nearly six years since the project was first reported to be in development at the streamer. The animated revival brings back one of the most enduring characters from Disney's early-1990s television output, and it arrives with a high-profile voice cast attached.
Mark Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, the alter ego of the titular crime-fighting duck, while Seth Rogen is set to star in a lead role and serve as an executive producer. The cast also includes Lizzie Caplan and Lilimar. The series is being developed by Sean Tretta, whose credits include Star Trek: Picard, and Borja Peña Gorostegui, known for Lost & Crowned.
The original Darkwing Duck premiered in 1991 and ran for 91 episodes, becoming a defining title of the Disney Afternoon block and a fixture of 1990s animated television. Its premise followed Drake Mallard, an ordinary duck who adopted the masked persona of Darkwing Duck to fight crime in the city of St. Canard, often assisted by his adopted daughter Gosalyn and the pilot Launchpad McQuay.
News of the series order caps a long development period for the property. The project was first reported to be in the works at Disney+ roughly six years ago, and it has now moved into a formal series commitment. The revival joins a broader wave of animated reboots and legacy sequels that streaming platforms have used to draw on established fan bases while reaching younger viewers.
For Hamill, the role adds another animated voice credit to a résumé already closely associated with the format. He is widely known for voicing the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series and the Batman: Arkham video games, work that made him a central figure in modern animation voice acting. Taking on Darkwing Duck places him at the center of a character with a similarly dedicated following.
Rogen's involvement extends beyond the microphone. As an executive producer, he joins the project in a creative oversight capacity, a dual role that has become common for established performers backing animated series. His participation signals that Disney+ is positioning the reboot as a tentpole title rather than a low-profile nostalgia exercise.
The announcement also reflects how streaming services continue to mine the 1990s for recognizable intellectual property. Darkwing Duck occupies a particular place in that history: it was a spin-off of DuckTales, and its mix of superhero parody, slapstick and noir-inflected storytelling gave it a tone distinct from other Disney cartoons of the era.
