Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine cuts half its staff after buyback
Hello Sunshine, recently reacquired by Reese Witherspoon and France-based Mediawan, is laying off about half its workforce, roughly 30 employees, according to a source familiar with the cutbacks.
Hello Sunshine, the production company co-founded by Reese Witherspoon, is laying off roughly half of its staff, about 30 workers, according to a source familiar with the cutbacks who spoke to Deadline. The restructuring comes weeks after Witherspoon and the France-based conglomerate Mediawan took back control of the company. The source said the cuts were not unexpected.
Hello Sunshine develops and produces film and television titles and also maintains the Witherspoon-branded book club, one of the most recognizable names associated with the company. The layoffs affect a significant portion of the team that has built the banner's slate in recent years, at a time when the company is reshaping its operations under new ownership.
Witherspoon bought the company back from Candle Media, the Blackstone-backed label that had acquired a controlling stake in 2021. According to Variety, the actress was able to reacquire the banner with the support of Mediawan for a fraction of the roughly $900 million valuation tied to the earlier deal. Variety reported that the transaction was completed earlier in the month and framed the move as Witherspoon regaining her production company after several years under outside ownership.
The reduction in headcount follows a pattern common in media after a change of ownership, when production companies look to trim costs and sharpen their focus. Neither Hello Sunshine nor Mediawan has been quoted in the reports on the specific reasons for the cuts, the size of any severance arrangements, or how the remaining workforce will be organized.
For Witherspoon, the layoffs mark a new phase for a company she founded to develop stories centered on women, a mission that helped make Hello Sunshine one of the most visible female-led production houses in Hollywood. Whether the smaller team can sustain the same output across film, television and the book club is the central question now facing the company as it moves forward under its restored ownership structure.
