New York City health officials are urging anyone who has visited Manhattan’s Upper East Side or the east side of Central Park since late June to monitor for symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, following an outbreak that has sickened at least 23 people. As of July 6, the New York City Health Department had confirmed 23 cases and 17 hospitalizations associated with the respiratory infection, though no deaths have been reported. The outbreak has prompted an investigation into contaminated cooling towers as the likely source of the bacteria.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which naturally occur in freshwater environments such as lakes and streams. However, the bacteria can grow in any area where water stagnates for extended periods, including shower heads, sink faucets, hot tubs, water features, plumbing systems, and cooling towers. People become infected when they swallow or inhale droplets of water containing the bacteria. Health officials emphasize that the disease is not spread from person to person and is not linked to the city’s drinking water supply.
«Legionnaires’ disease is deadly but can be effectively treated if diagnosed early,» said NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin in a press release. «New Yorkers at higher risk, including anyone who is 50 and older, those who smoke or people with chronic lung conditions should be especially mindful of their symptoms and seek care as soon as symptoms begin.» The warning is particularly urgent for vulnerable populations, as early recognition of symptoms can mean the difference between a quick recovery and life-threatening complications.
Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease typically appear between two and 14 days after exposure and resemble those of other forms of pneumonia. Common signs include fever, coughing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Some patients may also experience nausea, diarrhea, and confusion, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A medical professional can diagnose the infection through laboratory tests and chest X-rays. Treatment usually involves antibiotics, with medications such as levofloxacin and azithromycin being effective. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required for breathing support and intravenous hydration.
«Treatment needs to be early and aggressive,» said Dr. Nathan Goodyear, an integrative medicine expert based in Arizona. «Legionella infection is an intracellular infection that requires antibiotic treatment.» He noted that while healthy individuals may be prescribed oral antibiotics, intravenous antibiotics are often the initial option due to the severity of the disease. Dr. Andrew Handel, a pediatric infectious diseases expert at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Long Island, added that infections can lead to severe pneumonia in older people and those with compromised immune systems.
The mortality rate for Legionnaires’ disease is around 10% overall, but it rises to 25% for those who contract the infection while staying in a healthcare facility, according to the CDC. High-risk groups include individuals aged 50 and older, smokers, and people with chronic lung conditions, weakened immune systems, or underlying health issues such as obesity. Currently, there are no vaccines for the disease, making prevention and early treatment critical.
To reduce the risk of infection, the CDC recommends that building owners and managers implement water management programs to control the growth and spread of Legionella bacteria. Health experts also advise high-risk individuals to take proactive steps, such as quitting smoking and supporting immune health with adequate levels of vitamin D3, vitamin C, and zinc. «Increasing immune support is required to counter the immune dysfunction associated with advancing age,» Goodyear said, adding that obesity is another foundational risk factor for chronic inflammatory diseases that can exacerbate the severity of infection.
New York City health officials continue to investigate the outbreak and are working to identify and remediate any contaminated cooling towers. Residents and visitors in the affected area are urged to remain vigilant and seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms consistent with Legionnaires’ disease. The outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining water systems to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria, particularly in urban environments where cooling towers and plumbing networks are widespread.
