Former New York Rangers forward Ron Duguay was hospitalized over the weekend after losing consciousness at home, his family confirmed. The 68-year-old, who is battling Stage 4 cancer, fainted on Friday due to severe dehydration, according to his daughter Shay Thomas. The fall caused significant facial injuries, including the loss of several teeth. Emergency services transported Duguay to the hospital by ambulance.
Thomas shared the update on social media, explaining that doctors discovered additional medical issues during his evaluation. «He was diagnosed with varices, portal hypertensive gastropathy, internal bleeding, and an ulcer,» she wrote. Duguay's cancer has spread to his liver, and Thomas noted that pressure has built up inside the organ following surgery, chemotherapy, and the use of a medical pump. «That pressure can back up into the stomach and cause bleeding. The ulcer still needs further evaluation, but the bleeding and liver pressure are the major concerns right now,» she added.
Duguay remains admitted to the hospital receiving blood transfusions while being closely monitored by medical staff. Despite the setback, he appeared undeterred, posting a picture on Instagram showing his missing teeth with the caption, «Found my teeth on the bedroom floor.» His daughter described him as remaining strong, positive, and trusting in his faith throughout the ordeal.
The former NHL star originally revealed his cancer diagnosis in February, after being diagnosed with colon cancer more than a year ago. Treatment has already required the removal of his appendix and gallbladder. His family launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical costs, describing the financial strain the illness has placed on him. «Our dad has never been someone who asks for help… especially when it comes to money,» the family wrote. «Earlier in his treatment journey, the care he received in Florida nearly cost him his life. That led us to bring him to Orange County, where my sister and I live, so he could receive treatment here.»
Duguay enjoyed a notable NHL career spanning 11 seasons, playing for the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Los Angeles Kings. He was selected 13th overall in the 1977 draft and appeared in 864 regular-season games, recording 274 goals and 346 assists. He was a key contributor to the Rangers' run to the 1979 Stanley Cup Final. Off the ice, Duguay is in a relationship with former Alaska Governor and Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who has been a supportive presence throughout his cancer battle.
