Bruce Springsteen has once again entered the political fray, offering a pointed definition of patriotism during his recent PBS special, «Bruce Springsteen: Finding America in Song.» The rock icon, a long-standing critic of President Donald Trump, described what he calls «critical patriotism» as the true mark of a patriot. «I believe that’s the definition of a patriot, you know, that you love your country so much that you are willing to look at it clearly, recognize its faults, encourage it to be a better place, and believe that you carry in your heart the country that is waiting,» Springsteen said in the special.
The remarks drew a swift response from the White House, which directed Fox News Digital to an April Truth Social post from President Trump. In the post, Trump launched a blistering attack on Springsteen, calling him a «bad, and very boring singer, who looks like a dried up prune who has suffered greatly from the work of a really bad plastic surgeon.» The president accused Springsteen of having a «horrible and incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome» and urged fans to boycott his concerts, which he described as «overpriced» and «sucking.» Trump also highlighted his electoral victories, including winning the popular vote and all seven swing states, and declared that under his leadership, the country is now the «hottest» in the world.
Springsteen’s criticism of Trump is not new. The singer began voicing opposition nearly a decade ago while campaigning for Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race. The day after Trump’s first inauguration, Springsteen told a crowd in Perth, Australia, that he and his band stood with protesters, declaring, «We are the new American resistance.» In 2019, he described the political climate as «frightening» during an interview on «CBS This Morning,» saying that the stewardship of the nation had been «thrown away to somebody who doesn’t have a clue as to what that means.» He added that Trump lacked a grasp of «the deep meaning of what it means to be an American.»
The feud has escalated in recent years. Springsteen endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024, calling Trump «the most dangerous candidate for president in my lifetime.» Earlier this year, he released an anti-ICE protest song, «Streets of Minneapolis,» which he said honored «innocent immigrant neighbors» and remembered Alex Pretti and Renee Good, two individuals shot and killed in January while protesting immigration crackdowns in Minneapolis. On the opening night of his «Land of Hope and Dreams American Tour» in Minnesota, Springsteen described the current era as «living through some very dark times» and offered a prayer for Trump following the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner shooting in April, condemning political violence. «We can disagree. We can be critical of those in power, and we can peacefully fight for our beliefs. But there is no place in any way, shape, or form for political violence of any kind in our beloved United States,» he told the crowd at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas.
During a recent show in New Jersey, Springsteen called on his audience to join in «choosing hope over fear, democracy over authoritarianism, the rule of law over lawlessness, ethics over unbridled corruption, resistance over complacency, truth over lies, unity over division and peace over war.» Springsteen representatives did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. The ongoing war of words between the singer and the president reflects a broader cultural divide, with Springsteen using his platform to advocate for what he sees as a more inclusive and critical form of patriotism, while Trump dismisses him as a partisan figure out of touch with the majority of Americans.
