Well Go USA acquires Park Hoon-jung’s thriller Tristes Tropiques for North America
Korean sales company Finecut has sold Park Hoon-jung’s action noir Tristes Tropiques to several territories, including North America, ahead of its Korean theatrical release on November 25.
Korean sales outfit Finecut has sold Park Hoon-jung’s action noir Tristes Tropiques to several key territories, with Well Go USA acquiring North American rights. The deal comes as Finecut closes a fresh round of agreements for the film, which is carried in its American Film Market line-up.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Korea on November 25. Swift Distribution has taken the French-speaking territories, while Alfa Pictures has acquired rights for Spain and Andorra. The sales package is spreading across major markets before the local opening, a sign of international interest in the director’s genre work.
Park is best known to Western audiences as the director of the action thriller New World and the horror-tinged The Witch, which established him as one of the more distinctive voices in Korean genre cinema. Tristes Tropiques, the title of Claude Lévi-Strauss’s 1955 travelogue, marks his latest outing in the assassin noir mode, a style that has drawn consistent buyers at festival markets.
Trade coverage of the sales describes the film as a fresh entry in the director’s catalogue, and the Well Go USA pickup gives the title a dedicated American distributor with a track record in genre releases. Finecut continues to market the film at the American Film Market, where further territory deals are possible before the Korean opening.
