Shailene Woodley has opened up about the disappointment of learning that her scenes as Mary Jane Watson in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” were cut from the final film. In a recent interview for the “SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations” series, the actress said the role was “my dream” and that finding out she had been removed from the 2014 superhero sequel was a crushing moment.
Woodley filmed scenes opposite Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, but when the movie hit theaters, her character was nowhere to be seen. The actress recalled that she discovered the news through a phone call, describing it as “a fun phone call” in a separate conversation with Deadline. More than 12 years later, she says the experience still stings, especially because playing Mary Jane had been a long-held ambition.
Woodley’s casting as Mary Jane was announced with much fanfare, and her scenes were shot before the production decided to trim her storyline. The role eventually went to Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy as the primary love interest in that film, and Mary Jane was saved for a potential sequel that never materialized. The Amazing Spider-Man franchise was rebooted shortly after, with Tom Holland taking over the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Despite the setback, Woodley’s career continued to flourish.
