Rosamund Pike is set to both star in and produce "Feed," a body horror film directed by Leslye Headland. The project will be presented for sale next week at the American Film Market, the major trade show for independent film, according to Deadline. Variety is also covering the project, which confirms the interest of the American trade press in this announcement.
The screenplay is written by Daniella Isaacs and is directly inspired by the Finnish film "Hatching," released in 2022. The story follows a desperate mother who discovers a little-known collagen supplement that is supposed to transform her preteen daughter, a gymnast. The narrative hinges on the pressure of performance, on parental expectations in demanding sports, and on the temptation to give in to a miracle solution. These themes lend themselves well to the body horror genre, which makes physical transformation the heart of its dread.
Rosamund Pike, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for David Fincher's "Gone Girl," also drew attention for "I Care a Lot," a dark thriller in which she plays an unscrupulous legal guardian. Her presence in the cast of "Feed" therefore fits into a filmography that alternates between genre films and ambiguous roles, often on the edge of menace. The fact that she is producing the film, in addition to starring in it, indicates a broader commitment to the project.
Leslye Headland, for her part, is known for her television work, notably the series "The Acolyte" and "Russian Doll," which she co-created. Her career, marked by black humor and stories about mechanisms of control and pressure, aligns with the themes of "Feed." The choice of a remake inspired by a recent foreign film also allows the project to rely on a narrative foundation already tested by genre audiences.
Several elements remain to be confirmed. The shooting schedule, budget, distributor and release date have not been disclosed at this stage. The film therefore currently has only a sales announcement and a lead cast, with no official production date. The coming weeks, with negotiations opening at the Los Angeles market, should provide more information about its financing and its future in theaters or on streaming.
