House Speaker Mike Johnson will not remain at the head of Republicans in Congress when the new session begins in January. The decision comes after Democrats scored a decisive victory in the midterm elections, taking control of the House of Representatives.

Hakeem Jeffries is expected to become the next Speaker of the House. Jeffries has served as minority leader in the House for four years, and Democrats are projected to hold a majority of about 75 seats. This shifts the balance of power in Washington, ushering in a new period of legislative work.

The midterm results are widely seen as a voter reaction to President Donald Trump. Democrats won both the House and the Senate, and CNN declared the change in the Senate at 11:35 p.m. Eastern time. Democrats are projected to hold at least 51 seats in the Senate.

Markets reacted optimistically to the results. Stocks rose on Wednesday morning, and the Dow Jones jumped more than 1,100 points, or about 2.2 percent, approaching the 53,000 level. The Nasdaq also posted gains, and shares of media companies rose as well.
