The Scrubs revival began its second season with a two-episode premiere that placed Dr. Cox at the center of the story, elevated Ava Bunn to series regular, and trimmed the number of interns appearing in each episode, executive producer Aseem Batra said.

The premiere, which aired Wednesday night on ABC and streams the following day on Hulu, gave viewers a heavy dose of John McGinley's Dr. Cox while establishing Tosh, played by Bunn, as the lead intern. Bunn's promotion to series regular places her alongside returning original cast members Zach Braff and the show's other veteran stars.

Batra described the season as a deliberate recalibration of the revival's cast and rhythm. Fewer interns in each episode is intended to give the remaining characters more room to develop, a shift from the busier ensemble approach of the first season. The change follows a mixed reception to the revival's earlier character dynamics after the show returned from a nearly 16-year break.

Dr. Cox's health becomes a central thread in the new episodes. The premiere raises the question of whether the character will survive, a storyline that Batra and the writers use to drive the season's early tension. The showrunner also teased more appearances from Dr. Cox and the Janitor, and confirmed that Scott Foley joins the revival in a new role.

Another addition is Grant, a new mentee for J.D., who is played by Braff. The character's introduction expands J.D.'s role in the revived series and gives the show a fresh relationship to explore alongside its established pairings. Batra said the season will also address lingering fan questions, including whether viewers will finally see the child of J.D. and Elliott.

The revival's second season arrives as ABC continues to lean on familiar titles to anchor its schedule. Scrubs originally ran for nine seasons and became known for blending comedy with the emotional pressures of hospital work. Its return has drawn both longtime viewers and new ones, with the streaming window on Hulu extending its reach beyond the broadcast audience.

Batra's comments outline a season that tries to balance nostalgia with forward movement. Bringing back Dr. Cox, the Janitor, and other original figures satisfies fans of the earlier run, while the promotion of Bunn and the addition of Grant signal an effort to build a new generation of characters. Reducing the intern roster per episode supports that goal by keeping the focus on a smaller set of relationships.

The two-episode premiere sets up several unresolved threads, including Dr. Cox's condition and the direction of J.D.'s mentorship of Grant. Further episodes are expected to develop those stories while the revival continues its Wednesday run on ABC and next-day streaming on Hulu.
