SAG-AFTRA Votes To Extend Duncan Crabtree-Ireland’s Contract With Updated Title

SAG-AFTRA has voted to extend the contract of National Executive Director Duncan Crabtree-Ireland through June 20, 2032. The National Board approved the agreement at its Saturday meeting with 98.34% of the vote in favor, and the deal also adds CEO to his official title.

Crabtree-Ireland's contract had been set to expire on June 21, 2028. The extension moves that date back four years, keeping him at the head of the union's day-to-day operations well beyond the current term. The board's approval was recorded as a near-unanimous vote, signaling broad support for continuity in the leadership role.

The updated title, which the union said better reflects the scope of his responsibilities, places the CEO designation alongside his role as national executive director. Crabtree-Ireland has led the union's national operations, which include negotiations with studios and streaming companies, representation of members across film, television, and digital media, and advocacy on issues such as performer compensation and the use of artificial intelligence in production.

Industry coverage of the vote noted that the financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Variety reported that the board voted for the four-year extension and the title change in the same action, and that the contract was set to expire in 2028 before the change.

The vote comes as SAG-AFTRA continues to operate in a period of significant change for the entertainment industry, with ongoing debates over streaming residuals, AI protections, and working conditions for performers. A longer leadership term gives the union's executive team a longer horizon for those negotiations and policy priorities.
