A new three-part Netflix docuseries, The One About Matthew Perry, offers a closer look at the life of the Friends star through family footage and intimate interviews, including memories shared by his sister. The series, directed by Mary Robertson, debuted on October 27 and presents Perry as a striving young actor whose path to fame was shaped by his struggle with addiction.

The documentary is notable for who does not appear in it. None of Perry's Friends castmates sat for an interview, and neither did his longtime friend Hank Azaria, the Simpsons star who knew Perry as an ambitious young performer in Los Angeles. Later collaborators are also absent from the testimony. The result is a portrait built largely from people closest to Perry's personal life rather than from his professional circle.

One of Perry's best friends, Roger Costillo, recalls that production on Friends was halted in 2001 while Perry entered rehab. Costillo says the production had to shut down for a period of time so the actor could address his health. The detail places the show's most famous years alongside the private battle Perry was fighting at the same time.

Another account from the series describes the funeral of the actor, who died in 2023. According to the documentary, members of the Friends cast entered the service holding hands and cried around the casket. The moment is presented as one of the emotional beats that shows how deeply his former co-stars felt his loss.

Reviewers have described the series as a tragic and mournful portrait of addiction rather than a conventional celebrity profile. By relying on family perspectives and private recollections, the docuseries aims to show Perry beyond the sitcom persona that made him a household name, focusing on the pressures and personal costs that accompanied his success.
