France and Italy Set Record August Admissions as Global Box Office Tops $4 Billion
European and Middle Eastern markets drove a record-breaking August at the box office, with France and Italy among territories posting all-time high admissions as global ticket sales passed $4 billion.
France and Italy were among several European and Middle Eastern territories that recorded their best-ever August admissions figures as the global box office surpassed $4 billion, according to a new report from the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC).
The industry body said box office revenue across Europe, the Middle East and Africa rose 88% year-on-year during the month, marking the eighth consecutive period of growth in those regions. The report highlights a sustained recovery in cinema attendance, with audiences returning to theaters in numbers that in some markets exceed pre-pandemic levels.
UNIC, which represents cinema operators and distributors across Europe, did not disclose full country-by-country figures in its summary, but singled out France and Italy for achieving record admission counts in August. The two markets have historically been among the strongest in Europe for theatrical attendance, with France regularly posting some of the highest per-capita cinema-going rates in the world.
The global total of $4 billion for August represents a significant milestone for the exhibition sector, which has been rebuilding its audience base since the disruptions of recent years. The strong performance in EMEA was a key driver of the overall figure, according to the report.
The August results continue a trend of robust box office performance across major markets in 2026.
