Constance Wu Teases HBO Crazy Rich Asians Sequel Series Filming in New York
Constance Wu says she is reuniting with the Young family for an HBO sequel series to Crazy Rich Asians, which is filming in New York City and is described as a one-hour drama.
Constance Wu is returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians. The actress, a Golden Globe nominee, used a Friday appearance to tease an HBO sequel series that will bring her back to the Young family eight years after the 2018 film. She described the script, written by Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original movie, as « really funny ».
According to the report, the one-hour drama is currently filming in New York City. The project is being developed as a series rather than a film, marking a shift from the theatrical franchise that began with the 2018 feature and drew strong attention for its largely Asian and Asian American cast.
Wu's comments are the most direct confirmation to date that the Young family storyline will continue on HBO, with her returning to a role that made her one of the film's central figures. Her teaser suggests a tone that leans toward comedy even within a drama format, though the source material does not provide further details about the plot, the full cast, or a premiere date.
The original Crazy Rich Asians, adapted from Kevin Kwan's novel, followed a Chinese American economics professor who travels to Singapore with her boyfriend and discovers the wealth and social expectations of his family. The film was a commercial success and was widely cited in discussions about representation in Hollywood, which is part of why a continuation on a major premium network has drawn interest.
Industry observers have noted that sequels and spin-offs of successful films increasingly move to streaming platforms, where budgets and episode formats allow for longer storytelling. HBO's involvement places the project within its prestige drama lineup, although no official HBO statement beyond Wu's remarks was included in the available coverage.
Further announcements, including casting, creative team details, and a release window, have not been confirmed in the material reviewed. Readers should expect more information as production progresses and the network or studio releases official updates.
